Monsters

Have you seen my monsters?

I’m sure they slept with me last night
They left creases on my bed sheets and kisses on my cheeks
They captured me in my dreams and took me away from here
They sung into my ears and gently squeezed my nose
They tickled at my hands
Said they’ll never leave

Have you seen my monsters?
I’m sure they were here with me

They took away my socks
Teased each and every toe
They even rolled my pyjamas up
And gently scratched my knees

Have you seen my monsters!
I’m sure they were here with me

We went into the woods
Played in brambles
I know we did
My hair is still tangled
I have scratches on my nose
My hands feel as though we scrambled and ambled through every thorny bush
That’s because we did!

My arms know they swam the blue lagoon and lake; they ache

Have you seen my monsters?
They promised to never leave

I know so
I still lay here cradled just as when they held me in their arms
I know so
We laughed and cried so much they taught me how to capture sleep
It’s held as gems in my lashes and sleeves

Can you see them? Can you see my monsters?
They were here with me last night

We went to the hills you say are too far away
We climbed each and every one
The grass was wild and green
The greenest I’ve ever seen

Have you seen my monsters?
They must be here
You must know

They promised to never leave
